The Story Behind "Rage Inherent"

Hello dear reader.

This is the first in a series of stories behind some of the songs I've written over the years. These tunes are well traveled and served as a diary of sorts. The details are a bit fuzzy but I'll give it my best shot.

This one was such an old idea even at the time of recording it and......to be honest...I feel like it's a departure from much of the album in many ways. Still, I feel like there are some powerful moments in this one. There was a lot of experimentation going on with the arrangements and especially the vocals. I tend to flirt with the use of clean vocals here and there if the piece calls for it but........Let's just say I have a "kind of like"/hate relationship with my singing voice. It varies upon each day.

Anyway, "Rage" started initially as an idea in my head that I didn't know yet how to play. Partly because I came up with it while on the job as a "Pest Control Technician" (A kinder, gentler term for EXTERMINATOR!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH).

So there I was. Probably about 20 or 21 years young. Dousing a local patron's house with chemicals with no protective gear save for a green uniform and equally non-protective hat. (Oh, excuse me for a second. My third eye is itching. Hold on......Need to go scratch it with my fourth arm.)

Anyway anyway, I remember just being in my own head as usual while at work. The job allowed for plenty of alone time which helped me more times than once with working on my craft. As I was commencing my midday "safe" chemical spray, I got struck by this little inspirational thunderbolt. (Boredom is truly a gift kids.) It was a riff idea that sounded like something Meshuggah cut from the "Nothing" sessions because it was too fast for the record......At least that's how I felt at the time. Anyway, it was something I didn't want to lose but had no way of capturing so I wound up humming it to myself for 15 minutes while finishing up my work and undoubtedly looking more than a little awkward to my fellow New Hampshirites.

The idea for a long time was just the riff. I knew somehow it was going to be an intro to something but just didn't know where to take it. Eventually, I came up with the super rubber bandy pre-chorus riff. And then........Gah, I can't really remember how but probably from binging on way too much Machine Head, I wound up coming up with this melody "This paaaaaaaaaain follows you dooowwwwwwwwwn." seemingly out of nowhere. It was a strong hook and I knew it would fit with that riff somehow.

The rest of the song wasn't put together until about 6 or 7 years later when my inflatable mattress washed up on the shores of Union City New Jersey. A far cry from anywhere I had lived before at the time. Just a big ol sardine can with all of us packed in together. I had begun an internship working for the guys in Ill Nino at their Hoboken owned "Sound War" Studio. Soaking up all that busy energy and aggression definitely helped to construct the song's verses. And then it sat for many more years. Fast forward to 2018 when the release of the album "Inherent" was dropped on a.......still unsuspecting population haha. If you're interested, feel free to check out the song here on the site.

Thanks for reading.
